Ordinary seaman (od)

    One not rated as able (proficient). today, the od is the humblest of a merchantman’s deck crew and may be called upon to do any task that does not require the expertise of an ab. for example, chipping and scaling paint, standing lookout, handling mooring lines, taking a trick at the wheel, cleaning the heads, or waking officers due to go on watch. thanks to “rate inflation” this rating no longer exists in the royal or u.s. navies.

  1. Any non-naval passenger- or cargo-carrying vessel, including cargo ships, tankers, and passenger ships but excluding troopships.

  2. A trading vessel employed in importing and exporting goods to and from any quarter of the globe.

  3. A vessel engaged in commercial trade, excluding vessels operating solely within harbor limits, and river and estuarial craft (also merchant ship, cargo ship, freighter).
