Panama canal, английский
An artificial waterway crossing the isthmus of panama, connecting the caribbean sea with the pacific ocean, and providing a much shorter route than sailing around cape horn. it consists of dredged approaches, artificially created lakes, excavated channels, and three sets of locks at each end. on the atlantic side, they form continuous steps, but small lake miraflores separates the middle and upper locks on the pacific side. line handlers attach steel mooring cables, controlled by powerful electric locomotives (called mules) which guide ships through the locks and steady them as the chambers fill with water. built by the united states between 1904 and 1914, the mountainous terrain of central panama posed major engineering challenges, such as damming a major river and cutting through a mountain ridge. see also panamax.
