Seagull, английский
[1] usn slang for (a) chicken served aboard ship, or (b) a woman who follows her man from port to port. [2] seagull has no meaning in ornithology, but is used by laypeople to refer to all birds of the laridae family. these are typically coastal or inland, rarely venturing far out to sea. an ancient superstition holds that gulls landing in flocks on a ship, or making a loud noise along the coast, prognosticates a storm. this belief goes back to the classical era, being mentioned by pliny, while virgil writes in the georgics: scarce can the billow spare the curved keels, when swift the sea-gulls from the middle main come winging, and their shrieks are shoreward borne

Seaclergy, английский
During the 16th–17th centuries, it was widely believed that some aquatic creatures resembled christian priests. in des monstres (1578), ambroise pare described a “marine monster” resembling a bishop dressed in full pontifical garments; while in physica curiosa (1662), the illustrations of caspar sea 280 schott show an assortment of sea monsters, including a fish resembling a monk, a marine monster looking like a bishop, and two chimerical creatures with long, fishy tails. similar depictions appeared in numerous other works, and it has been suggested that religious tensions might have contributed to the depiction of clerical figures as alleged monsters. in 1854, naturalist japetus steenstrup compared 16th century illustrations of “sea monks” to that of a giant squid captured in 1853, coming to the conclusion, “the sea monk is firstly a cephalopod.”
