Diameter ratio = 50 or more), telescopic tube that is raised from a submerged submarine to see what is happening on the surface. lenses and prisms collect, reflect, and bend images down the tube to the eye of a sailor in the boat’s control room. the navigation or observation periscope—used to scan the surrounding sea and sky for targets and threats—has a wide field of vision at low-power magnification. the targeting or “attack” periscope has a more focused field of view and higher magnification. these conventional optical periscopes have three inherent hazards: • the hull must be pierced to allow the periscope tubes to pass through, creating points of potential weakness. • the boat can remain hidden underwater, but must sacrifice stealth by rising to periscope depth, where the tip of the periscope breaks the surface creating a “feather” that betrays its location to surface vessels or aircraft. • unprotected periscope operators are especially vulnerable to hostile laser radiation, which can dazzle or blind them. protection may take the form of a filter or an optical switch. technological developments have eliminated these exposures and modern submarines no longer use optical periscopes. one alternative is the photonic mast, another, the floating fiber optic scanner.
