A reaming device equipped with three tapered lugs or cutters designed so that drilling pressure necessary to penetrate rock with a noncoring pilot bit forces the diamond-faced cutters of the reamer to expand outward, thereby enlarging the pilot hole sufficiently to allow the casing to follow the reamer as drilling progresses. the casing is rotated with a pipe wrench while the non-coring and expansion bit is turned by the drill, and the casing is allowed to follow down the reamed-out pilot hole about 1% to 2 inches behind the upper end of the reamer lugs.
