Maas compass, английский
An instrument used to determine the bearing and inclination of the course of a borehole consisting of a nonmagnetic metal container inside of which is a compass needle floating on the surface of a liquid gelatin in a glass tube. when it is lowered into a borehole and suspended at a specific point therein, the gelatin cools and becomes jellylike in consistency, thereby holding the needle firmly in place. the compass segment and a clinometer are always combined in a single metal case; hence the direction and inclination of a borehole can be determined simultaneously.
