A stone that has been hewn, 1. hewn 1. roughly dressed, as stone shaped with mallet and chisel. 2. roughly shaped with an ax, as hewn logs. hewn-and-pegged joint a mortise-and-tenon joint formed by cutting a tenon to fit a corresponding mortise, joining these two members, and then securing them with a wood pin. such joints are used, for example, in post-and-girt framing.
