Some attributes are not meaningful for all members of a universe and are termed non-applicable. an example would be the parity of person. it is only meaningful for adult females. attributes that are only applicable for subsets of the data can cause considerable difficulty for machine learning and data mining algorithms that are not specialized to handle them. see also: knowledge discovery in databases, machine learning.
