Curse of dimensionality

Глоссарий по искусственному интеллекту
As the number of dimensions in a predictive model increases, the "size" of the data space being modeled increases in an exponential fashion. as the number of predictors increases for a given sample size, the coverage of the `data space` becomes increasingly sparse, so that any new observation becomes "further" away from any previously observed data point. this leads to problem of variable selection often encountered in many statistical techniques.

Cursed corsair, английский
This spanish tale is far more gruesome than that of the more famous flying dutchman. on the morning after a terrible storm, dahul rais looked out from the port of algiers and saw a tempting christian prize. a spanish brig traveling from barcelona to palermo had been dismasted by the tempest and was drifting towards the algerian coast. his swift galley soon reached and boarded the helpless craft, plundering baggage and a rich cargo destined for sicily. the spanish crew hoped robbery would satisfy the bloodthirsty corsair, but dahul’s lust had been aroused by an exceptionally attractive young woman cowering behind the terrified passengers and he ordered her brought to him. the ship’s chaplain, a jesuit priest, stepped boldly forward, urging the corsair not to ravish the mother of a newborn babe. the rais was impressed by this effrontery and laughingly said he would leave the woman alone, and free all the other passengers unharmed—provided the courageous priest agreed to his demands. the jesuit said would do whatever was asked of him, but balked when ordered to remove his cassock, foreswear christianity, embrace islam, and join the corsair’s crew. dahul was enraged by the broken promise and ordered all the passengers bound while the priest was nailed to the mast. then he had the woman’s baby brought on deck, ordering “fetch me the cook, we’ll have roast spanish piglet for supper! the woman can wait until after we’ve eaten.” when the baby had been cooked and carved, the corsair told

Statistical, английский

Arcing, английский
  1. Arcing techniques are a general class of adaptive resampling and combining techniques for improving the performance of machine learning and statistical techniques. two prominent examples include adaboost and bagging. in general, these techniques iteratively apply a learning technique, such as a decision tree, to a training set, and then reweight, or resample, the data and refit the learning technique to the data. this produces a collection of learning rules. new observations are run through all members of the collection and the predictions or classifications are combined to produce a combined result by averaging or by a majority rule prediction. although less interpretable than a single classifier, these techniques can produce results that are far more accurate than a single classifier. research has shown that they can produce minimal (bayes) risk classifiers. see also: adaboost, bootstrap aggregation.

  2. An electrical discharge between the edges of metal semiconductor package and the metal heat sink on which it is mounted.

  3. Electric current flow through a gap, often accompanied by intense heat and light.1

Wearable computer systems, английский
As the term implies, these are computer systems that are designed to be worn or easily carried about. a wearable system allows the user to circumvent the usual limitations of a workstation, server-based expert system, or intelligent agent. they are currently under active development and have been employed primarily in vertical applications, such as aircraft maintenance or stock analysis. the systems can range from the simple palm computer, such as the palm pilot, with specialized databases and decision programs (e.g., options analysis) to systems that are worn on a "hip pack" and have head mounted monitors, as well as specialized input devices (e.g., a "twiddler"). the newer systems can include wireless modems to allow continuous access to the internet and other specialized information sources, such as stock market feeds or patient databases.
