- In a processing unit, a high-speed buffer storage that is continually updated to contain recently accessed contents of main storage. its purpose is to reduce access time. a holding area for data within the cd-rom drive itself or on its interface board, that allows the system a method for matching data transfer rates and presentation speed requirements.
