A gate, or mixing, function is used in mixture-of-experts or hierarchical mixture-of-experts systems to combine or select the individual experts predictions or selections for output (at that level). as an example, consider a system to predict creditworthiness based on income and other factors. if the individual experts prediction consisted of models developed on non-overlapping partitions of the training data, the gate function would be a simple selection function that would choose the appropriate sub-model. if the submodels were developed using overlapping regions of the data, the gate function might weight the prediction of the sub-models by each models` distance from this data point, or by their previous accuracy. see also: hierarchical mixtures of experts, mixture-of-experts models.
