Between estimator

Словарь по экономике и эконометрике
Is used in the context of a fixed effects panel model, involving running a cross-sectional regression on the time averaged values of all the variables in order to reduce the number of parameters requiring estimation.

Between a rock and a hard place, английский
This phrase, meaning to have no acceptable alternatives, is sometimes said to refer to odysseus’ dilemma when rowing between scylla (a monster on the rocky cliff ) and charybdis (a dangerous whirlpool). more probably it is simply a colorful idiom without any nautical connection.

Between the devil and the deep (blue sea), английский
It is widely believed that this idiom (to which “blue sea” is a recent addition) refers to a sailor being lowered over the side to caulk the space between keel and garboard strake (one of two long seams known as “devils” because they were so difficult to maintain). however, that derivation is apocryphal, because the phrase was in use ashore long before it found its way aboard ship and, in any case, the garboard seam was so far down that it could only be caulked when the ship was careened or dry-docked. in fact, the idiom should be taken at face value. the devil is evil and deep water is dangerous, so being between them means facing undesirable alternatives.

Regression, английский
  1. Statistical technique used to evaluate relationships among variables (22).

  2. Регрессия

  3. 1. a stage where symptoms of a disease are disappearing and the person is getting better 2. (in psychiatry) the process of returning to a mental state which existed when the person was younger

  4. Regression commonly refers to the process of developing an empirical (data-driven) model to predict and/or explain one or more attributes in a database or set of data. it is most frequently associated with the simple linear model (y=mx+b) taught in most introductory statistics courses; the same ideas have been extended in many directions, including classification problems. when the emphasis is on hypothesis testing and simple models, the regression output is typically a few parameters that provide a direct linkage from the input variables to the predicted variables (or classification). in other situations the emphasis is on explaining as much of the variability in the output variables as is "reasonable" from the input variables. in this case, there are a number of "advanced" techniques, such as smoothing splines, decision trees, neural nets, and so forth, for which there are many "free" parameters. the meaning of any one of these parameters can be obscure. many data mining techniques are, at their core, variations on well-known regression techniques. see also: classification, clustering, decision trees, neural nets.

  5. The reappearance of a previously fixed problem.

  6. The statistical process of predicting one or more continuous variables, such as profit or loss, based on other attributes in the dataset.

  7. A mathematical technique used to explain and/or predict. the general form is y = a + bx + u, where y is the variable that we are trying to predict; x is the variable that we are using to predict y, a is the intercept; b is the slope, and u is the regression residual. the a and b are chosen in a way to minimize the squared sum of the residuals. the ability to fit or explain is measured by the r-square.

  8. A seaward retreat of a shoreline, generally expressed as a seaward

Estimation, английский
  1. Оценка. оценивание.

  2. Расчет; количественная оценка; вычисление etiology, syn. aetiology

  3. Расчет; количественная оценка; вычисление

  4. The process of generating a score or scoring function for a dataset. this can refer to either the process of fitting the model where you would be estimating the coefficients of the equations (e.g., the parameters of a regression function or the split points in a decision tree) or the process of assigning scores to individual observations using the model (e.g., credit ratings). this usually refers to a prediction or scoring function, as opposed to a classification function, but can also be used in the latter context. see also: classification, statistics.
