- A very fast sailing ship of the 19th century that had three or more masts, a square rig, a long, low hull, and a sharply raked stem.
- A fast sailer, formerly chiefly applied to the sharp-built raking schooners of america, and latterly to australian passenger-ships. larger vessels now built after their model are termed clipper-built: sharp and fast; low in the water; rakish.
- A 19th century fast-sailing merchantman, fully-rigged with an exceptionally large sail area, designed for speed rather than cargo capacity, with a long, low, narrow hull, sharply concave knife-edged bow, and three to seven tall square-sailed masts. built specifically for the east indian tea trade, they were the fastest commercial sailing ships ever built. speeds in excess of 15 knots were usual, and in 1854 sovereign of the seas reported making 22 knots while running down to australia.
