Skids

Глоссарий по вертолетной технике
  1. Are bearers (timber or steel) positioned under the cargo to enable forklift handling at port, and for ease of rigging and lashing on board ship.

  2. Massive fenders; they consist of long compassing pieces of timber, formed to answer the vertical curve of a ship`s side, in order to preserve it when weighty bodies are hoisted in or lowered against it. they are mostly used in whalers. boats are fitted with permanent fenders, to prevent chafing and fretting. also, beams resting on blocks, on which small craft are built. also, pieces of plank put under a vessel`s bottom, for launching her off when she has been hauled up or driven ashore.

  3. The forerunner of davits. used to support lifeboats while on board and to slide them to the side for launching. it has been claimed that the phrases “on the skids” and “skid row”—meaning to be descending to, or have reached, the depths of depravity or poverty—are analogies for the descent of a lifeboat. however, other sources suggest the term is a corrupt reference to the corduroy log pathway used to skid (drag) felled timber through the woods and bogs of northwest canada and the united states. unemployed lumbermen would often be reduced to sleeping and begging on this so-called “skid road.”
