- Selfcontained underwater breathing apparatus
- Acronym of self-contained underwater breathing apparatus. a portable device that allows independent underwater movement. one or two tanks of compressed air are strapped onto the back of a diver, connected by tubing to a mouthpiece through which the diver breathes at a valve-controlled rate. this allows the scuba diver to stay underwater longer than with the simple breath-holding techniques used in snorkeling and free-diving, and is not hindered by air lines to a remote air source as with hookah or full surface support. also called by the trade name aqualung.
