  2. A type of antipersonnel cannon load in which lead balls or other loose metallic items were enclosed in a tin or iron shell. on firing, the shell would disintegrate, releasing the smaller metal objects with a shotgun-like effect.

  3. A container of musket balls or other small projectiles (langrage), fired from a cannon as an antipersonnel weapon or to sever rigging. also called caseshot, and similar to grape shot or shrapnel.
