    Since world war ii, the most common method of replenishment at sea. the supply ship holds a steady course, the receiving ship comes alongside and conforms to the other’s speed. a messenger line is then used to pull across transfer lines and a telephone link. the operation is risky. with two or three ships running side-by-side, even a slight speed or steering error could be disastrous. see also vertical replenishment and astern fuelling.
