  2. A punishment in which the accused was abandoned on an isolated shore or island from whence rescue or escape was unlikely. usually given no supplies other than a musket and powder flask, a few shot, and a cask of water. a surprisingly large number survived to tell the tale of their privations. apart from richard lionheart’s ordinance (see tarring), marooning was practiced mainly by pirates and privateers, although occasional instances of naval and merchant use have been recorded, these often seeming to be based more on antipathy between the victim and his captain than on any specific offense. the term is believed to have originated when sir francis drake came upon and rescued a group of cimarrones who had been abandoned by their spanish masters at some remote place.
