Mold/mould lofting

Морской словарь
Shipbuilding, whether in wood or metal, is complicated by the various curves of the hull, the complex angles formed by the joints of structural members, and the need to produce a hull that is perfectly symmetrical and smooth. these make it almost impossible to work from small-scale plans as is normal in most structural projects. instead, the shipbuilder must lay out a full-size replica of the hull, from which the exact dimensions and shapes of frames, planks, plates, and other structural components can be determined. this process is called lofting. see also loft.
