A decision problem may be represented by three elements: a set of valid actions a, a set of states s, and a utility or payoff function u(a, s) >0 for elements in a and s. the problem is to choose the action a when the state s is uncertain. decision support system (dss) a data modeling and reporting system that has been structured to answer specific ongoing business questions or issues. it is usually distinguished from classical is systems by its emphasis on "real-time", or interactive analysis, where the business analyst can use multiple tools on the data to provide answers "now." it should be distinguished from data mining and knowledge discovery in databases (kdd), where the emphasis is on discovering "new" relationships to expand the current data model. see also: data mart, data mining, data warehouse.
