- An official document which allows someone to do something, e.g. one allowing a doctor to practise, a pharmacist to make and sell drugs or, in the usa, a nurse to practise he was practising as a doctor without a licence. she is sitting her registered nurse licence examination. (note: the us spelling is license.)
