The ribs and the space enclosed by them comment: the rib cage is formed of twelve pairs of curved bones. the top seven pairs, the true ribs, are joined to the breastbone in front by costal cartilage. the other five pairs of ribs, the false ribs, are not attached to the breastbone, though the 8th, 9th and 10th pairs are each attached to the rib above. the bottom two pairs, which are not attached to the breastbone at all, are called the floating ribs.
