- Public official charged to inquire into the causes and circumstances of any death which occurs through violence or suddenly (suspicious causes)
- A public official, either a doctor or a lawyer, who investigates sudden or violent deaths comment: coroners investigate deaths which are caused by poison, violence, neglect or deprivation, deaths from unnatural causes, during the post-operative recovery period and when the doctor feels unable to give a reliable cause of death. they also investigate deaths of prisoners and deaths involving the police.
- An important officer. seamen should understand that his duties embrace all acts within a line drawn from one headland to another; or within the body of the county. his duty is to investigate, on the part of the crown, all accidents, deaths, wrecks, &c.; and his warrant is not to be contemned or avoided.
