Cyc is a very large general knowledge base and associated inference engine under development since 1984 by douglas lenant. the goal of the project is to build a very deep layer of "commonsense" knowledge about things and their relationships that can be used to make other programs more knowledgeable. the cyc knowledge base consists of tens of thousands of individual terms and assertions that relate those terms. the knowledge base is currently divided into hundreds of "microtheories," all of which share common assumptions, but which may disagree with the assertions of other "microtheories." the cyc program is now also adding its own assertions as part of its inferencing process. this technology has begun to be applied in a number of areas. given its large common sense capabilities, it
