- The inter-building and intra-building cable connections between entrance facilities, equipment rooms and telecommunications closets. backbone cabling consists of the transmission media, main and intermediate cross-connects and terminations at these locations.

A series of directional microwave paths carrying common information to be relayed between remote points. the backbone microwave system is engineered to allow the insertion of signals, the dropping off of signals and the switching of signals along its length at designated relay points. in order to maintain the signals in the highest possible quality, the equipment used in the backbone microwave system is normally of a higher technical performance level than other microwave electronics in the network. antennas are always directional.
