An infection of the anterior horn cells of the spinal cord caused by a virus which attacks the motor neurones and can lead to paralysis. also called polio, infantile paralysis comment: symptoms of poliomyelitis are paralysis of the limbs, fever and stiffness in the neck. the bulbar form may start with difficulty in swallowing. poliomyelitis can be prevented by immunisation and two vaccines are used: sabin vaccine is formed of live polio virus and is taken orally on a piece of sugar; salk vaccine is given as an injection of dead virus.
