  1. A rank in the army higher than the regimental commission held by an officer, affording him a precedence in garrison and brigade duties. something approaching this has been attempted afloat, under the term “staff.”

  2. Military or naval commission in a higher grade or rank, usually without pay and with limited authority. sometimes granted for the duration of hostilities, at others as a retirement honor. no longer used in the british armed forces.
