Air & naval gunfire liaison company. anglo-german naval agreement: in june 1935, without consulting the other signatories of the treaty of versailles, britain attempted to appease hitler by negotiating a bilateral agreement giving germany the right to build a navy beyond the limits of the treaty. the total tonnage of the kriegsmarine (fighting navy) was allowed to increase to 35 percent of that of the royal navy, and remain permanently at that level. more significantly, britain agreed that germany could build a u-boat fleet equal to the total submarine tonnage of the commonwealth—a decision it would regret (see battle of the atlantic).
