It was customary for merchant seaman to be given a cash advance against their first month’s wages, in order to buy clothing and necessaries for the voyage. “working the dead horse” was their slang for the subsequent period of laboring against pay which had already been drawn and spent. when they began to earn money again, they celebrated the end of their unpaid month by “flogging the dead horse.” this involved hoisting a straw-filled canvas horse into the rigging and belaboring it to pieces, all the while singing the “dead horse chantey,” of which there are numerous versions, one of them being: the horse is gone and will come no more. goodbye old horse! they say so and they hope for. goodbye old man! they’ll hoist him to the fore yardarm. goodbye old horse! there he won’t do sailors no more harm. goodbye old man!

An empty wine, beer, or liquor bottle is familiarly known as a “dead marine” or “dead soldier.” this is one of the very few colloquialisms whose origin can perhaps be traced. rear-admiral hrh the duke of clarence (later king william iv) is alleged to have been dining aboard his flagship when he pointed at a pile of empty wine bottles and ordered his steward to “clear away those dead marines.” a major of marines immediately objected to the slur on his corps and the astute duke replied that “like marines these bottles have given their lives nobly in the cause of duty and, given the chance, would willingly do so again.” the authenticity of this anecdote is suspect because none of its sources cites the name of the flagship or the date of the incident. moreover there is a more earthy alternative explanation. according to the lore of the royal navy’s lower deck, an empty bottle resembles dead marine because it is of no further use to anyone; if thrown overboard, a bottle floats neck down, and so does a marine due to the buoyancy of air trapped in his huge boots. the term seems to have been introduced independently in australia long after it was in circulation elsewhere. because beer bottles were returnable to licensed recyclers called marine dealers, it seemed natural to the aussies to call the empties “dead marines.”
