Dunkirk, английский
This important seaport in northern france was the site of “operation dynamo,” the largest amphibious withdrawal under fire from a hostile shore in history. during the 1940 battle of france, a german army trapped the entire british expeditionary force and a number of its allies in a large beachhead around dunkirk. in the hope of evacuating up to 45,000 troops, the royal navy assembled 41 destroyers, plus sloops, minesweepers, and other warships. a large number of civilian craft—yachts, ferries, fishing boats, pleasure steamers, etc.—volunteered to assist under t-124 articles. while the warships embarked soldiers from the port’s piers and jetties, the small boats picked up men from ten miles (16 kms) of beaches and ferried them to the bigger vessels. in the event, the estimate of evacuees was vastly exceeded— in the chaos of withdrawal under fire, accurate figures were not compiled, and several different estimates exist, though all agree on order of magnitude— in round figures, approximately 203,000 british and 135,000 allied troops were landed in england; the former being almost the entire expeditionary force (less casualties). the allies were about 10 percent belgian, the rest being french support troops—the french combat units, who were valiantly defending the perimeter so that others could escape, were all killed or taken prisoner.
