Today referring to the highest degree or furthest point attainable, this term originally described an island at the most northerly reaches of the world. it was first mentioned by the greek explorer pytheas who claimed to have visited it between 330 and 320 b.c. his on the ocean is now lost, but is quoted in the works of later authors. for example, strabo’s geography (book ii, chapter 5), written in the first century of the current era, tells us that pytheas described thule as “the most northerly of the britannic islands.” this could refer to the shetlands, faeroes, or iceland, but others have speculated it could be greenland, or an island off norway. it is generally pronounced “two-lay” rather than “tool” or “thool.”
