- Models designed to predict the value of an attribute or set of attributes based on other the values of other attributes. prediction is often distinguished from classification, where the objective is to categorize an observation. in this context, prediction implies the generation of values or ranges for an attribute or group of related attributes. in a general sense, however, classification is just a (possibly constrained) form of multivariate prediction. see also: classification, data mining, regression. predictive model markup language (pmml) pmml is an extended markup language (xml) application designed to allow "automatic" interpretation of predictive models via the internet, supporting distributed mining and prediction.
