Sand colic

    A digestive disorder that occurs when a horse eats sand or dirt with his feed.

A loose granular material that results from the disintegration of rocks, consisting of particles smaller than gravel but coarser than silt. sand can be described in terms of grain size, color, composition, morphology (angularity and shape) and surface texture. hence the term means different things to different people. to the seafarer, it is essentially a mineral substance deposited along the shores of bodies of water and in river beds, usually containing shells, fossils, corals, algae, volcanic material, and the remains of marine plants and animals.

A granular material resulting from the disintegration of rock. foundry sands are mainly silica. “bank sands” are found in sedimentary deposits and contain less than 5% clay. “dune” sand occurs in wind blown deposits near large bodies of water and is very high in silica content. “moulding sand” contains more than 5% clay; usually between 10 and 20%. “silica sand” is a granular material containing at least 95% silica and often more than 99%. “sand core” is nearly pure silica. “miscellaneous sand” includes zircon, olivine, calcium carbonate, lava, and titanium minerals.
