When an attribute is categorical ("red", "green", "blue") it often needs to be recoded into a group of stand-in variables that are commonly referred to as dummy variables. in the above example, you could encode the single three-level categorical variable into three indicator variables called red, green, and blue. each of the three variables would be a 0/1 variable, where a 1 indicates that item is in the appropriate category. there are multiple forms of encodings in common use. their value depends on the objective of the model.
