- A yarn with special color effects such as space-dyed yarn, or textural effects such as nubs, slubs, or built in irregularities. needle-punched: the process of passing a fabric through a series of needles that penetrate the fabric to fill in the gaps by entangling the fibers.
- A yarn produced for a special effect. novelty yarns are usually uneven in size, varied in color, or modified in appearance by the presence of irregularities deliberately produced during their formation. in singles yarns, the irregularities may be caused by inclusion of knots, loops, curls, slubs, and the like. in plied yarns, the irregularities may be effected by variable delivery of one or more yarn components or by twisting together dissimilar singles yarns. nub and slub are examples of novelty yarns.

Any naturally coloured diamond with a noticeable depth of bodycolour considered to be rare or attractive. red and green are the rarest fancy colours, followed by purple, violet, orange, blue and pink. yellow, sometimes called canary diamonds and greenish yellow diamonds are more common. light, or low-saturation coloured diamonds other than yellow or brown, may be classed as fancies, but, in the gia colour-grading system, yellows and browns must be darker than the z master diamond to merit a fancy grade. fancy colour grades are decribed as faint, very light, light, fancy light, fancy, fancy intense and fancy dark in the gia system. treated diamonds are not considered fancy diamonds, but are sometime referred to as `treated fancy diamonds` in the trade.

- One of the threads of which ropes are composed. a number of these are twisted together to form a strand, in proportion to the size of the proposed rope. three strands are then twisted into one another, which completes the process of ordinary rope-making; but cables, hawsers, and other ground tackling, are composed of three strands, each of which is formed of three lesser ones. (see cable, hawser, &c.)—a tough yarn. a long story, or tale, hard to be believed.
