Magnus effect, английский
  1. The effect on a spinning cylinder or sphere moving through a fluid, in which force acts perpendicular to the direction of motion and to the direction of spin. this is used to advantage in baseball, in which the trajectory of a pitched ball is a distinct c

  2. During the 1850s, german scientist heinrich gustav magnus developed a theory to explain anomalies in the curved trajectory of cannonballs. (similar phenomena are seen in baseball, tennis, cricket, and other ball sports; including golf, where “dimples” on the ball extend the distance of flight.) the commonly-accepted explanation is that the spinning object creates a “whirlpool” in the surrounding air. on one side, rotation complements the windstream, enhancing its velocity. on the opposite side, the motions are opposed and velocity is decreased. consequently, there is an unbalanced force, creating “pull” at right angles to the wind. (recent studies show that this explanation is not entirely valid; rather that the magnus force is due to asymmetric distortion of the boundary layer by the combination of spin and flow.) magnus effect is fundamental to the operation of flettner rotators. magnus-hitch: a round turn taken around a spar and then jammed by a half-hitch around the spar on the opposite side to the standing part.
