- A scale of wind force, based on behaviour of the sea under varying degrees of wind speed.
- The scale describing wind force devised by admiral sir francis beaufort in 1808, in which winds are graded by the effect of their force (originally, the amount of sail that a fully rigged frigate could carry).

- In 1805 royal navy commander francis beaufort devised a 12-point scale for the indication of wind-strength based on observation of the speed of a square-rigged frigate running before the wind with sails clean-full (bellying) for forces 2 through 4 and, for higher forces, the amount of sail which could safely be carried in pursuit of an enemy when sailing full and bye (as close as possible to the wind without having the sails shiver). in 1838, by then rear-admiral and hydrographer of the navy, beaufort persuaded the admiralty to adopt his scale “for all her majesty’s ships and vessels of war.” then in 1853, the first international meteorological conference, held in brussels, adopted beaufort’s scale as the standard format for recording weather conditions in ships logbooks. in 1912, with fewer and fewer seamen sailing in square-riggers, the scale was revised to a system based on the visual condition of the sea; in 1926 wind speed ranges in knots were applied to each force; and in 1946, the world meteorological organization (wmo) added five more hurricane force wind speeds.
