  1. A ring or arc of coloured or white light that encircles the sun or moon when seen through a cloud of ice crystals. halos are produced by the refraction of light. the most commonly observed halo forms at a 22 degrees radius from the sun/moon. one at 46 degrees radius may also be seen.
