      A short, narrow, metal pipe with a bell mouth. the pipe was filled with quick match, while the cup held a paste of mealed gunpowder, gum, and water. a little dry powder was sprinkled on top and sealed with a paper cover. the tube was inserted into the vent of a cannon, holed with a pricker, and ignited by slow-match or portfire to explode the charge. the tubes were originally made of tin or copper, but hot expended tubes with sharp edges lying on the deck were a hazard to sailors with bare feet, so goose quills of the same size and shape were substituted. the tube was too short to make contact with the cartridge but, when ignited the quick match exploded instan- preamble 248 taneously, producing a powerful spurt of flame which easily penetrated the cartridge bag. see gun firing.

Denotes a basic, indivisible, symbol, concept, or utterance in a language or logic system. for example, the basic unit of english speech is the phoneme. in a computer language, a ``+" sign, indicating an addition operation, is a basic symbol. in a logic, primitives would include such connectives as and, or, not, and implies. principal components analysis (pca) principal components analysis is a feature extraction and data reduction technique. it extracts the best linear functions of an attribute matrix, where "best" is measured in terms of the total accounted variation. each successive component is orthogonal to all the previously extracted components. in the scatterplot in figure p.3, the first principal component falls along the primary data axis, and the second component is orthogonal to it. it should be apparent that a simple pca is a simple scaling and rotation of the original data axes. figure p.3 — scatterplots: simple principal components analysis see also: nonlinear principal components analysis, principal curves.

    3. In computer graphics, a shape, such as a line, circle, curve, or polygon, that can be drawn, stored, and manipulated as a discrete entity by a graphics program. a primitive is one of the elements from which a large graphic design is created.
