Equipment should never be stressed close to its breaking strength, and knowing its limitations can help prevent accidents. safe working load—defined as minimum breaking load divided by safety factor—refers to the maximum stress that can be applied while obtaining efficient service and prolonging life. most manufacturers provide tables that show their equipment’s safe working load under various conditions, but in their absence rules of thumb must apply. in the case of cordage the load should never exceed one-fifth of its breaking strength or, said another way, the breaking strength should be at least five times the weight the line is expected to hold.
