  1. An inattentive helmsmen might allow the dangerous situation to arise where the wind is blowing into the sails `backwards`, causing a sudden (and possibly dangerous) shift in the position of the sails.

  2. To landlubbers this phrase describes someone who has been disconcerted by some unexpected news or happening, but it originally described a hazardous maritime event. when a square-rigged vessel was sailing with the wind and a sudden unexpected squall from a different direction blew the sails back against the masts, it threatened to snap them off, rendering the vessel helpless and un-maneuverable. t-akr: hull classification symbol of a fast logistics ship (dod).
