Clean slate, английский
- At the helm, the watch keeper would record details of speed, distances, headings, etc. on a slate. at the beginning of a new watch the slate would be wiped clean.
- This term—which now implies the removal of (unfavorable) items from a person’s record— probably originated at sea in the days of sailing ships when changes of course were temporarily recorded on a slate. at the end of each watch the data was logged and the slate was wiped clean.
