- Serving a watch on the weather side of the ship, exposed to wind and spray.
- During times of rough seas, seasick passengers often retreat under the weather deck, partly for shelter, but just as importantly because the greatest swaying action is above deck and the most stable point is down near the keel. hence they tend to feel better when below.
