  2. The "existential quantifier" in logic is a quantifier of a proposition that implies there is at least one case in which a particular proposition is true. it is usually represented by a backward capital e. see also: universal quantifier. expectation (art) the top-down prototype vector of the selected f2 category in an art network. see also: art, ftp:://ftp.sas.com/pub/neural/faq2.html, http://www.wi.leidenuniv.nl/art/. expectation (mathmatical) the expectation of an attribute is a measure of a "typical" location of an attribute. it is the arithmetic mean or average value of an attribute with respect to a specified probability distribution. it is calculated by multiplying each possible value for the attribute by its respective probability (or density) and summing. the common arithmetic average of a set of k numbers is an expectation with respect to a probability distribution that assigns probability 1/k to each of the elements in the set. expectation-maximization (em) algorithm the expectation-maximization (em) algorithm is a technique for estimating machine learning techniques. it can be employed when the model meets certain technical constraints. if the model can be simplified by the assumption that certain hidden values exist, the model learns by first guessing the hidden values and then cycling through a series of maximizations given the current hidden values, and then estimating the hidden values given the current maximized values. it has been successfully used in a wide variety of machine learning and statistical models; one example being the autoclass class clustering program.
