- A name given to the tropical revolving storms of the china sea and the north pacific ocean.

- Ty-fong, or tai-phon. the chinese word for a great wind, applied to hurricanes or cyclones. they are revolving storms of immense force, occurring most frequently in those parts of the world which are subject to monsoons, and take place at those seasons when the monsoons are changing. they seem to be eddies formed by the meeting of opposing currents of air—for instance, the westerly winds near the equator and the easterly winds of higher latitudes—which accounts for the important fact that these storms revolve in opposite directions in the two hemispheres—in the southern with, in the northern against, the hands of a watch; but the circular tendency in both supports the name of cyclone.

- (от кит . тай фын - большой ветер), местное название тропических циклонов штормовой и ураганной силы в юго-вост. азии и на дальнем востоке. наиболее часты с июля по октябрь.
- Тропический циклон. тайфуны зарождаются в пассатной зоне, между 10-м и 20-м градусами широты в обоих полушариях земли над теплыми участками поверхности океана, где температура воды достигает 28 °c. ниже 5° широты тропические циклоны не встречаются; вблизи экватора практически отсутствует отклоняющая сила вращения земли, воздействие которой необходимо для устойчивого кругового движения воздуха, характерного для циклонов. в среднем на земле возникает в год около 120 тропических циклонов (90 – в северном полушарии и 30 – в южном). чаще всего тропические циклоны возникают в начале осени или в самом конце лета, когда температура воды на поверхности океана самая высокая. они редко бывают зимой и практически не встречаются весной.

A name given to the tropical revolving storms of the bay of bengal and arabian sea. sometimes used as a general term for tropical revolving storms of all oceans, or in the form "tropical cyclone". depressions of the temperate zones were formerly often referred to as cyclones, but depression or low is now used to distinguish them from the tropical storms. the term "cyclonic depression" is still sometimes used for a depression, as also is "extra- tropical cyclone".
