[1] in the united states military, moustaches are allowed in all branches, but beards are generally forbidden on the basis of hygiene and the need to seal gas masks. the navy did allow beards for a time in the 1970s and 1980s, but subsequently banned them again. the coast guard allowed beards until 1986. special operations forces have been allowed to wear beards in middle-eastern countries in order to better fit in with the indigenous population. [2] in the british military, article 1105 of queens regulations and admiralty instructions forbids the wearing of moustaches without beards by officers and men of the royal navy (see permission to grow). personnel of the royal marines, army, and air force may wear moustaches, but not beards, except in extreme climatic conditions or for medical reasons. special forces may wear beards when on covert intelligence operations or behind enemy lines. see also haircutting.
