- A robot is a general-purpose system that can perform multiple tasks under conditions that might not be known a priori. robots can include such things as sensors and other input devices, a computer-based controller, and some form of an actuator, such as a mechanical hand or drill that it can use upon its environment. the japanese have classified industrial robots into five categories: slave manipulators operated by humans, limited sequence manipulators, "teach-replay" robots, computer-controlled robots, and "intelligent" robots. the united states robotic industries association defines a robot as ``a reprogrammable, multifunctional manipulator (or device) designed to move material, parts, tools, or specialized devices through variable programmed motions for the performance of a variety of tasks."
