- Originally the term was used as a name for all crystalline diamonds not usable as gems; later it was used to designate those diamonds not usable as gems or toolstones. currently the term commonly is applied to low-grade industrials suitable only for use in a fragmented form. see fragmented bort. also sometimes spelled boart, boartz, boort, borts, bortz, bowr.
