This is one of the earliest of maritime charitable organizations, established in 1590 by queen elizabeth i, to pay gratuities known as “smart money” to seamen who had been hurt or wounded in royal service. it was funded by compulsory payroll deduction from every seaman and apprentice according to their wages. chearly!: obsolete command to do something heartily or quickly. check!: [1] command to stop or slow down.
