Dieppe raid

Морской словарь
An allied assault on this small french port in august 1942 was intended to probe german defenses and test allied amphibious tactics. it discovered the former to be formidable and the latter abysmal. tactical intelligence was woefully inadequate, and planning was inept. inter-service cooperation barely existed. promised close air support did not materialize and, with nothing larger than a destroyer, naval gunfire alone was inadequate. approximately 75 percent of the attack force (5,100 canadians, 1,000 british commandos, and a handful of u.s. rangers) was killed, wounded, or captured. diesel-electric: a propulsion system consisting of a diesel engine connected to a generator whose electricity powers the propellers.
